Job Description

First of all: I'm looking for a US-based assistant. Canadians will be considered as well. You also need to have excellent communication skills (particularly written). If you don't fit these qualifications, please don't waste your time or mine by applying for this job.

Also, please note that this post is long. I'm not usually this long-winded, but this is an important position, and I want to make sure I get the right person.


I'm a small business owner who's found himself way too busy. I'm looking for someone who can pick up some of the administrative tasks. We're a computer support/web design/SEO company, so some level of experience with/understanding of one or more of these fields would be a huge bonus.

You must be willing to learn - there's plenty to learn, and I'm certainly willing to teach. You must also be able to take initiative and do things you know you're supposed to do without being asked. You must be reliable - if you say you're going to do something by a certain date, I've got to know it's going to be done. I have a hard enough time making sure all of my work gets done - the last thing I need is to make sure your gets done, too.

You should be available to work as many as 20 hours per week if needed, but not be dependent on those hours as your only source of income - there will be more work some weeks than others. Work can mostly take place on your own schedule, but I will occasionally ask that a task be completed more quickly (e.g., within 24 hours).


Your primary responsibilities would include:
- Online Research
I often need someone to look up the best/fastest way to do something, or if something is even possible. These can sometimes be fairly technical queries, hence the preference towards some familiarity with technology.
- Employee/contractor coordination
I have multiple contractors working for me, but they don't usually interact with one another. You would serve as an intermediary, receiving & checking work from one before passing it on to another contractor.
- Placing orders
Place orders for products or services that I specify. This would most likely be done via paypal, with an account that I fund. Only trustworthy people need apply - all transactions are tracked, and automatically reported immediately via email.
- Customer interactions
These would most likely be limited, but you may be asked to email customers on my behalf. Communications must be professional & courteous.
- Data entry/analysis
I may on occasion send you some numbers, and a spreadsheet to plug them into. Some knowledge of Excel would be useful.

Other optional responsibilities, depending on your skill set & level of comfort with each:
- Social media management
Post to facebook and/or twitter, to keep a business's page active.
- Writing/editing
Write articles, press releases, or whatever else is needed that you're comfortable with. Edit articles for basic grammar & spelling.
- Travel planning
Really just more research. Given a destination, narrow down the hundreds of options of where to stay, how to get there, etc., to the few best available options.
- Website management
Post content to basic websites (Wordpress, Blogger, etc.). No HTML or other advanced skills required.

Of course, as the business grows & expands, other responsibilities could come up, as well.


Communications will take place primarily via email, although phone and/or text could play a role, as well.

My budget is, unfortunately, a little tight right now, so keep that in mind when bidding (I'm told I'm very easy to work with, though!). If business goes well, a good worker could find themselves getting a raise in the future.
